Novation Impulse 25 Garageband

edited December 2014 in General App Discussion

So.. I just bought the Impulse 49 and I'm trying to make it work with Auria. Faders and transport.

Did a quick search on the forum about the Impulse and saw David Hodder from Novation saying it won't work with Auria because it needs/works with a 'daemon'. ???

Anyone has this or had?

@Syrupcore: was I dreaming or you use this one?

Thank you. Any help would huh.. Help.

This feels very good by the way.

  • Auria has no MIDI (as yet) so I would be amazed if you could control the faders etc., Plenty of other apps do though.

You can control Auria's transport and mixer with external interfaces via Aurias Mackie hui/mcu. I got the 61 key version of impulse yesterday but haven't hooked it up to the iPad yet. I know the Impulse can be set up to send out other protocols then MIDI, should work with Auria, I'll know more once I've tried it myself.

Edit: Btw, are the black keys a bit noisy when you hit them fast & lose? As opposed to the white keys which feels and sounds completely different. My black keys gives this 'something is a bit loose the In there' kinda sound when doing faster runs

  • @ChrisG noisy keys? Yikes. Keep me posted on that one.

  • Yes I know I should be able to do it. Anyway.. It's late here I can bang my head against the wall tomorrow. And yes.. The black keys sound like they have little marimbas inside when you pluck them fast. Some more than others, I think.

Anyway.. Keep me posted and I will too. This seems like quite a beast.

Well most keyboards do. The noise is 'different' between various keyboards. I just thought the black keys where not up to the same quality as the white keys.

But, that doesn't matter now. I killed my impulse. Don't use cheap, no-name, crappy USB hubs with cheap no-name power adapters, that can't get the voltage right.. Gonna have to send it back for a new one.

That seems exactly what I'm doing. And I'm staying in a very unstable house. Damn..
You think I should get a better hub?

At least a somewhat decent power adapter. I used a really really cheap plastic no-name adapter w/ switchable voltage settings. I'm fairly sure that's the thing that killed my impulse (even with proper voltage settings).

  • For strange noisy keyboard's try typing on the Ensoniq SQ-80!

I think you may be out of luck because the Impulse doesn't talk HUI/MCU. It relies on the Novation AutoMap prog, running on PC/Mac (not available on iOS) to act as a 'translator' between Impulse and DAW. That's what David Hodder was referring to as 'daemon'.

Auria does recognise some MMC however, so basic transport control buttons should work.

    Good luck

  • Exactly. I did get 'play' to work after changing the transport to mc in the keyboard but it would actually play three seconds later and even worse with the stop function. And that's all. But I'm not done yet. I'm 'kinda sick so I'm taking it easy with frustration. Last night I was a bit bummed that I could have got the Launchkey 49. It works out of the box, no powered hub, and it has those pads to control launchpad app. But after my experience with the Lk Mini I thought this would be much better. The Launchkey 49 doesn't even have semi-weighted keys. And these feel great for its price, I think. Better than anything I ever had.
